One of the most important rituals of everyday life in Georgia is the Supra. A table ceremony conducted by a table master who intimately and poetically brings out a toast to the guests. In this performance the stage is the symbolic table and the guests the public. They are treated to a ‘meal’ of polyphonic singing, virtuoso dance, fragments of hope, melancholy, naivety and opportunity, in short, a stunning meal. Following a recipe in the form of a socio-political text written by famous Georgian playwright Rezo Kldiashvili. The performance predicted in metaphor a regime change, which indeed occurred three months later by the Rose Revolution.
Supra is a coproduction with Grand Theatre, Groningen, Felix Meritis, Amsterdam and Folk Palace Kutaisi, realized with financial support from FAPK, Prince Bernhard Culture, Dutch and German Embassy in Georgia, Kutaisi Municipality, Theorem- Culture 2000. It was presented at summer festivals in the Netherlands and Germany (among others Noorderzon, Tanz im August, Amersfoorts Terrace and Felix Meritis).

“The performance dates back to what the Greeks saw as the desired intention of theatre: to discuss tricky questions through drama and spectacle. Doing so, both choreographers fulfill a daring and unique role within the Dutch dance scene…”
—NRC Handelsblad, Ingrid van Frankenhuyzen
“…Supra is in this way […] also a ritual against temptation. It touches as it leads straight to the heart…”
—Der Tagesspiegel, Ulrich Amling
“…In no time the young dancing Georgians have a firm grip on the audience, to mutual pleasure…”
—Berliner Zeitung, Michaela Schlagenwerth
